Shipbuilding in Northwich, focussing on W.J.Yarwood & Sons.Ltd.
Many people have given me photographs to use for my talks to the Heritage Society, many of which have been used by them in a publication about Yarwoods specifically. There were very few photos of Isaac Pimblotts yard, since the brothers spent most of their time feuding rather than building ships, generally building inferior craft.
With the notable exception of the last Brunners "Marston" and "Marbury" which although I have never seen these ships, I must commend their infinitely more sensible aft-end design which were Crew-Friendly rather than spartan and traditional souped-up Weaver Flats such as I lived in aboard "Davenham". I horrified the purists at Ellesmere Port by styling the after-end like the Pimblotts versions, with high wheelhouse, a bridge, and day-cabin beneath at deck level. But Pimblotts platework was nowhere near as brilliantly executed as at Yarwoods Dock.
Other than these two later yards, all the others came and went, making wooden flats and lighters on the bank somewhere with no plant other than a steam-box and saw pit.
Here is a collection of pictures which may surprise you by their variety. Mostly by the younger of the Yarwood brothers, Douglas, which are identified where possible, but if you want all the answers you must do your own research as I have moved on, but do not want these fine prints to be lost to the world. If they go in a museum nobody will ever see them again....ever. Not saved for posterity, but lost in a vault. I will gladly add more if you can find them, good quality, large format as possible.
